My object has been to give a concise and clear analysis of the word-forms and syntax of the Russian language. In the paradigms of the nouns and verbs I have chiefly followed the arrangement of Miklosich. I have treated the grammatical forms in such  a way as to show their relation to the Old Slavonic, known to us by the monuments of its literature which have been preserved.
 
I have allowed myself occasional reference to other Indo-European languages for purposes of illustration. Great pains have been taken with the ‘aspects’ of the verbs, perhaps the most interesting feature in the Slavonic forms, and it is hoped that they are made as clear as is possible in a rudimentary work of the present kind.
 
The prepositions, both in and out of composition, which in Russian - and, indeed, in all the Slavonic languages - exhibit a luxuriance of development, reminding us of ancient Greek, have also been carefully treated.
 
The accents have formed a laborious part of the work: the Russian do not mark them in their books, and therefore they can only be acquired orally. Not a little curious also is the power which the preposition frequently possesses of attracting to itself the accent of the word which it governs (from the preface). Re-edition. In Südwestafrika leben etwa 22000 Sprecher der Nama. Ihre Sprache wird auch von den Bergdama gesprochen, die ebenfalls dort leben (etwa 24000 Sprecher stark).
 
Über die Nama-Sprache gibt es bereits eine ganze Anzahl von Veröffentlichungen. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht, die Grammatik dem wissenschaftlichen Verständnis dadurch näher zu bringen, dass sie vom Satzbau und nicht von den Wortformen ausgeht.
 
Wenn also in erster Linie eine theoretische Erkenntnis von der Eigenart der Sprache erstrebt wird, so wird doch zugleich dem Bedürfnis derjenigen Rechnung getragen, die praktische Kenntnisse im Nama erwerben wollen. Dazu ist eine Methode der Darstellung angewandt, die in langjährigem akademischen Unterricht an mehreren Sprachen erprobt ist: es werden Beispielsätze, die aus den verschiedenen Quellen, kirchlichen und volkstümlichen, sowie eigenen Aufzeichnungen ausgewählt sind, vorangestellt und aus solchen Belegen die Regeln der Grammatik abgeleitet (nach der Vorbemerkung). Über die Sprache der Kulia (Bakulia, Kulya) ist meines Wissens noch nichts zusammenhängend veröffentlicht worden. Einige Vokabeln finden sich, abgesehen von geographischen Namen auf Karten, in dem genannten Werk von Weiß, und im Journ. of the Royal Geogr. Soc. 1870 S. 303 ff., als „ki-nkâra“ von T. Wakefield notiert. Für die folgenden Untersuchungen jedoch habe ich diese Notizen unberücksichtigt gelassen, da sie phonetisch zu ungenau sind.
 
Mein Material besteht aus Wörterverzeichnissen und kleinen Texten, die ich aus dem Munde von verschiedenen Sprecher im Oktober 1908 aufgezeichnet habe, als ich jene Landschaften in der Expedition des damaligen Unterstaatssekretärs v. Lindequist besuchte. Mein Hauptgewährsmann war ein etwa 30jähriger Sprecher aus der östlichen Landschaft Kira, namens »Werema Omasangiye«, behördlich »Selemani« genannt. Seine Mundart bildet die Grundlage meiner Untersuchungen. Mittlersprache war Suaheli.

The Kakhyen or Singpho are the most numerous people occupying the mountainous region stretching from Upper Assam across Northern Burma beyond the Chinese boundary into Yunan. In Burma they extend as far south as Momeit and Theinni. During the last forty years, at different times, more or less attention has been called to this interesting people. On the Assam side, Hannay, Robinson, Bronson, Brown and Dalton, and on the Burman side, Anderson, Bowers, and Roman Catholic and Protestant missionaries have published sketches of their language and mode of life.
 
The language of the Kakhyen is by no means so monosyllabic as most of the languages of Farther India. Dissyllables are numerous. These are not couplets of two words signifying the same thing which are so common in these languages, but proper dissyllabic words.
 
Doubtless the language has a remote affinity to the Burman. In grammatical construction the Kakhyen and Burman are precisely the same, and this constitutes their principal resemblance. There are only a few words, however, which show the slightest resemblance to the Burman. The Burman has only three tones or intonations, while the Kakhyen has six. In this the Kakhyen resembles the Karén far more than the Burman, for the Karén has six tones. (Re-edition. Originally published 1880 in London).
