La mujer en la ciencia: historia de una desigualdad

Este volumen presenta, a través de un recorrido cronológico, el papel de la mujer en el ámbito científico, entendiendo por ciencia, conocimiento y saber en un sentido amplio. Las circunstancias socio-económicas y culturales de la vida de las mujeres científicas así como su desarrollo personal se han tenido en cuenta a la hora de explicar en qué aspectos reside su contribución a la historia de la ciencia desde la Edad Media hasta la actualidad. A pesar del merecido avance en los derechos de la mujer y el apoyo incondicional de algunos científicos, estudios recientes sobre igualdad de género señalan que aún queda mucho camino por recorrer en este sentido.

Ha sido, precisamente, el escaso recono-cimiento de las aportaciones femeninas en un campo de trabajo en el que impera la cultura androcéntrica, lo que ha determinado de qué manera tiene que ser contada la historia. Por ello, Mujer y ciencia: historia de una desigualdad pretende ser un tributo a todas las mujeres que nos precedieron y abrieron las puertas para que nosotras podamos expresarnos con voz propia.

Tradition and Innovation in Mesoamerican Cultural History contains essays by leading authorities in their fields and rising scholars, covering important areas in a wide range of disciplines. This book is the result of a highly successful conference on Mesoamerica held at California State University, Los Angeles in May 2009, organized as a homage to the distinguished Mesoamerican scholar Tatiana Proskouriakoff (1909-1985) and as a commemoration of the first centenary of her birth. This volume contains papers ranging from linguistics, archeology, and ethnohistory, to art history and literary studies, representing cutting-edge contributions to all of these disciplines. While several papers relate to matters related to the Mayan cultural area, other contributors also provide recent research on other major Mesoamerican cultures such as the Nahuatl and Zapotec, thus encompassing all of the major geographic areas that constitute the cultural hub of Mesoamerica.

Die Jugen (Sym-Jenissejer) im Lichte ihrer Sprache

Die Jugen sind eines der seit dem 17. Jh. bekannten Jenissej-Völker Sibiriens, nach ihrer Ethnogenese vielleicht das rätselhafteste von diesen Völkern. Sie hielten sich bis ins 20. Jh. hinein, die letzten von ihnen, die ihre Muttersprache noch sprechen konnten, hielten sich sogar bis zu den 70er Jahren des 20. Jhs. Man vermutet unter ihnen einen alten Stamm der vorjenissejischen Bevölkerung, der durch einen sehr starken ketischen Einfluss geprägt wurde.

Durch zwei Umstände sind die Jugen für die Forschung von besonderem Interesse: zum einen durch die Hydronyme auf -sym / -tym, die von ihrem Siedlungsgebiet am Jenissej bis zum Stromgebiet der Kama in Osteuropa verbreitet sind und eine Spur in die vorhistorische Zeit der Region darstellen; zum anderen durch die archaischen Züge in ihrer Sprache, eine Besonderheit, die für die Rekonstruktion des Protojenissejischen nicht hoch genug einzuschätzen ist. Im vorliegenden Werk bringt der Verfasser zum ersten Mal in vollem Umfang die jugischen sprachlichen Materialien, die durch seine Feldforschung am Jenissej in den Jahren 1961-1971 gut dokumentiert werden konnten. Die Sprache widerspiegelt eine aneignende einheimische Kultur und stellt durch die festgehaltenen alten Inhalte Bilder einer langen Vergangenheit dar, an welche man durch ethnologische und archäologische Daten nur fragmentarisch herankommen kann.

Sexuality, procreation and Inca ethnobotany

The book contains an overview of the different aspects of sexuality and procreation in the Inca empire, including subjects as fertility, aphrodisiacs, prostitution, diseases, abortion and childbirth. Attention is paid to the attitude of the Incas towards sexual morals, and in this context unwanted sexual behavior is discussed. While virginity was not considered as a virtue, chastity was an absolute requirement for the group of the acllas and mamaconas. The use of plants by the Incas to modulate sexuality and procreation, thus ethnobotany, is a major subject of this book. The use of plants for enhancing or decreasing fertility and sexual lust feelings, to facilitate child birth and for the treatment of diseases, have been discussed. Magic played an important role in Inca life and that also applies to sexuality and procreation. In many instances magic was combined with the application of plants, such as the huacanqui, a kind of amulet in love affairs.

Die Jenissejer unter den frühen Völkern Zentralasiens

Das Problem der frühen Völker Zentralasiens ist von seiner Lösung noch weit entfernt. Trotz unterschiedlicher Deutungen der Angaben in den altchinesischen Chroniken sowie der vor-handenen archäologischen, ethnologischen, anthropologischen und linguistischen Daten, wobei das Erwünschte zuweilen für das einzig Mögliche und Wahre gehalten wird, kommt man dennoch Schritt für Schritt voran, einerseits durch neue Materialien, andererseits durch neue Hypothesen und zusammenfassende Erkenntnisse.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit versucht der Verfasser einige neue Deutungsmöglichkeiten aus der Sicht der Jenissejistik vorzuschlagen, da die Ethnogenese und Geschichte der jenissejischen Völker aufs engste mit der betreffenden Region verbunden waren. Das einst zahlreiche mobile einheimische Volk der Jenissejer, das sich allmählich, nachdem es seine Kraft verbraucht hatte, zerstreute und in anderen Völkern, die ihm historisch folgten, auflöste, hinterließ eine bemerkbare Spur in geographischen Namen, in denkwürdigen Ereignissen der Vergangenheit, ja auch in Sprachen und Kulturen der ihm gefolgten späteren Völker. Der Schwerpunkt der Ausführungen des Verfasseres liegt in der möglichen Verbindung der Jenissejer mit dem Dingling-, Xiongnu- und Hunnenvolk.

The Aztec mind

Nahuatl ethnobotany, mental health and psychoactive drugs among Ancient Mexicans

Ethnobotany studies the relationship between plants and humans. In this book the aspects of Aztec ethnobotany dealing with plants modifying “normal” states of mind are addressed. Up to now the attention to plants that cured mental diseases among the Aztecs is limited. In other words, whereas there have been many studies regarding Mexican hallucinogens, they did mostly not specifically focus on their use and role in Aztec culture to cure mental diseases.

Thus, in this book the primary target will be the relationship in Aztec society between plants on one side, and the diseased and normal mind on the other. Since the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs is of major importance for the understanding of such a relationship, a careful analysis of Nahuatl lexicon is as much as possible incorporated, together with a close inspection of the different sources available on the topic of the ideology of mental health and its magical, religious and empirical treatment.
