The volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the conference on language development titled 'Estonian in Europe', held in Tallinn in March 2001 to open the European Year of Languages 2001 in Estonia. The main aim of the conference was to discuss the processes and developments in progress in both Estonian and other languages at the turn of the millennium, and factors influencing various languages. The papers are divided into three sections according to their content:

Language and society - the increasing importance of languages and their implementation in functional domains in current Europe, with special attention to the condition of and outlook for the languages spoken on the shores of the Baltic Sea;

Language and technology - the current situation, development prospects, and requirements of language technology;

Language and structure - problems of orthography and pronunciation, word formation, lexicology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition.

The editors of the volume are Helle Metslang (Professor of Estonian at the Tallinn Pedagogical University) and Mart Rannut (Associate Professor of Estonian as Second Language at the Tallinn Pedagogical University). Among their previous publications are Temporal relations in the predicate and the grammatical system of Estonian and Finnish (H. Metslang, 1994) and Linguistic Human Rights. Overcoming Linguistic Discrimination (ed. by T. Skutnabb-Kangas and R. Phillipson in collaboration with M. Rannut, 1994).

Most typological studies fail to provide an accurate account of the notion of 'anterior' since they restrict their analyses to the so-called 'Perfect'. Daniel Burgos pushes the limits much further by confronting corpus-based data of British English, Standard German and Argentinean Spanish with most recent typological research on Tense and Aspect and grammaticalization. It is the idiosyncratic way with which these three languages mark anteriority that leads this author to provide systematic solutions for the understanding of this phenomenon from both a synchronic and diachronic perspective.

This study is a daring innovation in this field due to its onomasiological and semasiological interplay and its exhaustive treatment of an 'anterior' as a super-ordinate category. What is more, it is the first study whose author embarks on a detailed historical comparison of these three language varieties, bringing Argentinean Spanish into focus, and exploring the interaction between Tense and Aspect, verbal forms and temporal adverbials. In terms of structure, content and style, Daniel Burgos presents a pleasant book that makes a notable contribution to both language typology and contrastive linguistics.

Noun Phrase Structures in Maltese University Students’ Commerce Texts

This is a detailed analysis of noun phrase errors in written English taken from a corpus of 7500 structures collected from the examination papers of 30 undergraduate commerce students of the University of Malta. A corpus of erroneous and error-free structures is appended and preferred target forms given for erroneous NPs. The study takes into account those features that characterise the NP’s as the output of Maltese learners of English and to a lesser extent also those that characterise them as NP’s within the academic register. To this end the data is also classified as specialised or non-specialised.

Erroneous NP’s are grouped by structure and analysed according to their developmental or cross-linguistic nature. An attempt is made to identify fossilised errors. The number and type of errors suggest that very few subjects have achieved near native-like competence, although the general picture constructed from the analysis suggests that a good number of subjects exhibit features in their production indicative of advanced learner status, such as a generally high proportion of developmental errors in relation to transfer errors. The analysis also provides an insight into the language usage and language preferences of this restricted bilingual community through the use of a questionnaire.

El Subtitulado Cinematográfico: Fusión de Palabra, Gesto y Movimiento Escénico

Mientras que una película doblada se ve y se escucha simultáneamente, la película subtitulada introduce un componente añadido de presión temporal: el acto de leer.

El propósito de este trabajo es dar cuenta del papel destacado de los subtítulos a través de una caracterización de las rutinas básicas que se emplean en su preparación, junto con las convenciones relativas al uso del español en el subtitulado de películas de habla inglesa. En este sentido, los resultados nos permiten constatar en qué medida los subtítulos añaden significado a una película, y cómo en una película subtitulada el requerimiento de leer se convierte en un obstáculo que el espectador puede llegar a superar hasta el punto de fijar su atención en la experiencia básica de la película, dado que la dimensión temporal queda totalmente controlada.

Dieser Essay ist der ernsthafte Versuch eines Nicht-Phonologen, die Phonologie (und die Phonologen) zu verstehen und sich selbst einige Fragen zu beantworten, die phonologische Laien im Universitätsleben und auf linguistischen Kongressen am liebsten umgehen. Warum ist die Phonologie so schwer? Und: Wie hängen die abstrakten Einheiten des Phonologen (z.B. Phoneme) mit den Einheiten der gesprochenen Rede (z.B. Phone) zusammen? Die letzte Frage etikettiert der Autor als das „Zuordnungsproblem“, das er als zentral für das Verständnis phonologischen Tuns ansieht. Anhand zweier einflussreicher phonologischer Theorien (Trubetzkoys funktionaler Strukturalismus sowie die generative Phonologie der 60er Jahre) zeigt der Autor, dass das Zuordnungsproblem schon früh erkannt und (sehr verschieden) gelöst wurde. Neuere phonologische Richtungen wie die nicht-lineare Phonologie haben, wie der Autor argumentiert, aufgrund ihrer autonomisierten, isolatorischen und in steigendem Grad abstraktiven Theoriebildung das Zuordnungsproblem aus dem Auge verloren, wenngleich es in den Nischen der experimentellen Phonologie in seiner ganzen Tragweite erkannt wird und weiterlebt.

Dr. Volkmar Engerer hat Slavistik, Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft und Deutsch als Fremdsprache studiert. Cet ouvrage réunit les recherches actuelles sur la linguistique de deux langues morphologiquement différentes: le turc et le français contemporains. A la différence du système flexionnel du français, le turc est une langue à forte tendance morphologique, et ne fonctionne que par le système de suffixation. Les études en question sont complémentaires et concernent divers domaines linguistiques comme la phonétique, la morphosyntaxe et la sémantique, l’intonation et l’énonciation, l’acquisition du langage et la didactique. Ainsi, l’ensemble des recherches adoptent une approche aussi bien morphosyntaxique que pragmatique, et ce à partir des analyses de corpus qui, non seulement, font partie de l’écrit, mais aussi de l’oral de la langue concernée. The Nature and Conditions of Pragmatic and Discourse Transfer Investigated through Naturalized Role-play

For decades, the first linguistic and cultural influence on second language performance (technically known as pragmatic and discourse transfer) in cross-cultural interaction has fascinated researchers because its nature and especially its conditions have never been fathomed out. The aims of this investigation are threefold. First, it examines the nature of pragmatic and discourse transfer in compliment responses by Vietnamese speakers of English as a second language in cross-cultural interaction with Australians. Second, the research project investigates the underexplored conditions of pragmatic and discourse transfer. In the quest for the nature and conditions of pragmatic and discourse transfer, research methodologies provoke much debate because they have different advantages and disadvantages, though the ultimate goal remains the controlled elicitation of data that is comparable to real-life production. The third aim of the present study is to propose and validate an innovative methodology of data collection in cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics research _ the Naturalized Role-play. This methodology is capable of realizing the highly desirable but virtually impossible goal of eliciting spontaneous data in controlled settings. Findings of this investigation indicated what was transferred and how pragmatic and discourse transfer patterned, upon which new hypotheses (e.g. the Compliment Response Continuum Hypothesis) were formulated.

The investigation also uncovered as yet unknown conditions of pragmatic and discourse transfer (e.g. awareness in language production) and their interaction. Moreover, the Naturalized Role-play proved to fulfil its aim and to be a pioneering creative solution to the controversial methodological problem. The study also presents implications of its findings for second language learners, teachers and native speakers of different languages in social interactions where cultures meet.

Factual Concessive Connectors

A contrastive analysis in Italian and Polish

The aim of the study entitled Factual concessive connectors. A contrastive analysis in Italian and Polish is to examine and compare the use and functions of the factual concessive connectors in two European languages: Italian and Polish. The comparison is based on a detailed analysis of the syntax, meaning and synchronic usage patterns of these connective expressions. Contrary to most of the studies devoted to this issue so far, the analysis is not restricted to ideal sentences, but rather accounts for the distribution of factual concessive connectors in real examples provided by linguistic corpora.

The theoretical starting point of the research is the framework of Functional Grammar (FG), especially the theory concerning the hierarchical structure of discourse (Dik, 1997; Hengeveld, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1997, Crevels, 1998, 1999). After the discussion on some theoretical proposals regarding different semantic-functional levels of adverbial connection, two main domains of concessive connection, ‘representational’ relations versus ‘interpersonal’ ones, have been distinguished.

The analysis carried out on a corpus of authentic texts of written and spoken language in relation to the previously identified semantic and pragmatic parameters shows a number of correlations existing in both languages and confirms the main hypothesis of the research: not all concessive connectors are identical in meaning and use.

The analysis also focuses on some historical aspects concerning the diachronic origins of concessive connectors. The synchronic distribution of Italian and Polish concessive connectors that emerges from the corpus-based analysis is reviewed from the diachronic perspective and this re-examination indicates the existence of some interesting correlations between the diachronic origins of concessive connectors and their synchronic usage patterns.
