The Nebé Language

David Leedom Shaul

The Nebé Language is a description of a previously unknown language. Nebé is a member of the the Cochimian languages, which also includes Gabb Cochimi, Jesuit Cochimi, and Robinia. The Cochimian languages were spoken in the middle half of the Baja Caliornia pennsisula. The Cochimian languages are probably related to the Yuman family of languages. The Nebé Language provides data for comparative Cochimian phonology, as well as Nebé morphosyntax which may be compared with the grammar of Jesuit Cochimi. The study of comparative Cochimian and comparative Yuman will yield information on the linguistic prehistory of Baja California. The Nebé data dates from around 1680. In addition to sections on Nebé phonology and grammar, there is a comparative vocabulary of Nebé and the three other Cochimian languages, organized by the English gloss of each cognate. A lexicon of about 480 morphemes also lists about 600 derived words given in transcription with the original spellings following. An English-Nebé index follows.

A Multidimensional Study of Reinforcers in African Languages

Gabriel D. Djomeni & Constantine Kouankem (eds.)
University of Dschang; University of Bertoua

This book is a collection of a first ever in-depth scholarly analysis of reinforcers in African languages and notably Cameroonian and Moroccan languages. It provides the reader with sound knowledge about this linguistic feature which has not yet received an academic attention so far. Furthermore, the book attempts to unveil this language element to feed researchers in languages and linguistics with new insight from African languages. Without focusing on a specific theoretical background, the collection provides the reader, in particular linguists and students in languages and linguistics all together with language specialists with new thought-provoking data, capable of shaking research and publications on the morpheme called reinforcers in African languages. The book does neither cover all Cameroonian languages nor all Moroccan languages because it deals with a linguistic feature not common to all the languages of the two countries involved. Though the contributions cover only languages from two African countries (due to the fact that the reinforcer does not seem to feature in all natural languages), the book is however very rich in phono- and morpho-syntactic data capable of triggering further research.

The rating of class essays written by students of English as a second language: A qualitative study of criteria and process

Manal Saleh Alghannam
Qassim University

This study concerns a neglected aspect of L2 English writing research: teachers' processes when rating essays written by their own students for class practice, not exams, with no imposed rating/assessment scheme/rubric. It draws on writing assessment process research literature, although most work has been done on scoring exam writing, using a set scoring rubric, where all raters rate the same essays.

Eight research questions were answered from data gathered from six teachers, with a wide range of relevant training, but all teaching UK university pre-sessional or equivalent classes. Instruments used were general interviews, think aloud reports while rating their own students' essays, and follow up immediate retrospective interviews. Qualitative coding was undertaken using NVivo.

Teachers reported similar perceptions of ‘good writing’, and all used a form of analytic rating, achieved in three broad stages, drawing in part on information beyond that just in the essay text.  However, they varied in what criteria they prioritized when actually rating essays, and in the scales, they used to summarize evaluations, ranging from IELTS scores to evaluative adjectives. Most claimed to use personal criteria, and showed concern for the consequential pedagogical value of their rating more than achieving a test-like reliable score.

Die andere Seite des Krieges          Video Buchvorstellung

Auf Spurensuche im Apachenland

Veronika Ederer

A sketch grammar of Northeast Geg Albanian from southern Kosovo

Adrian Kuqi
University of Zuerich

Northeast Geg is a variety of the Albanian language mainly spoken in Northeast Albania and Kosovo. Albanian is an isolate within the Indo-European language family. Spoken Geg is especially under-researched, also because of its almost absence in Standard Albanian, which is based on the southern Tosk dialect. The Geg dialect has infinitives consisting of the particle 'me' and a participle, where Tosk uses subjunctive constructions, a future tense built with the auxiliary 'to have' and the infinitive, where Tosk uses the auxiliary 'to want' and a subjunctive construction, and different uses of certain tenses like the imperfect (also with different forms than in Tosk). This sketch grammar describes the variety of the two cities Suhareka and Zaqishti in southern Kosovo based upon the data collection of twelve native speakers of said region, including monologic narrations as well as elicitations. These data also served for the publication of a trilingual online dictionary called Geglex in Albanian - German - English of about 2800 entries. This grammar contains information about phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, three transcribed sample texts, as well as further noun and verb paradigms.

Tamil Folklore and its Related Fields

Saraswathi Venugopal
Formerly Professor & Head, Department of Folklore, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India

The present volume explains how Tamil Folklore is related to the fields of Psychology, Sociology, History and Semiotics. Among its functions folklore provides a socially sanctioned outlet for the expression of what cannot be articulated in the more usual, direct way. It is precisely in folktales, folksongs, proverbs etc., that anxieties can be vented. Psychoanalysis of folksongs, folktales and proverbs is the first part of the volume.

In part two, Sociology and folklore, some of the important theories of two eminent scholars namely Emile Durkheim and M.N.Srinivas are taken up for application of analysis in Tamil folklore. They are ‘Social facts’ from Durkheim and ‘Sansritisation’ and Social change etc., from Srinivas. Part three, History and folklore, Conveys the idea that written history of a country or community is not complete without its oral history. Myths, legends, songs etc., are the source materials for knowing the history of a given people, as told and believed by them, and thus these folk genres become the counterparts of the written historical records. In part four, Semiotics and folklore, communication models and theories developed by great scholars namely Ferdinand de Saussure, C.S.Peirce, Roman Jakobson and J.L.Austin have been taken up for application of analysis in oral literature.

Persische Grammatik
Mit Litteratur Chrestomathie und Glossar

Carl Salemann & Valentin Shukoski

Re-edition, originally published 1889 in Berlin).

Inhalt: Schrift- und Lautlehre, Formenlehre (Substantiv, Adjektiv, Zahlwort, Pronomen, Verbum, Adverbia), Wortbildung (Komposition, Ableitung), Metrik, Litteraturgeschichte, Chrestomathie.
