The present Dictionary contains the lexical portion of an Oregonian language never before reduced to writing. The Klamath or Máklaks language is spoken in two dialects, that of the Klamath Lake Indians, or É-ukshikni, and that of teh Modocs. No obstacle prevented the gathering of the terms of bot dialects into one and the same word-list, because the dialects differ but slightly, though more in their lexical than in their grammatic forms.

But aside from these minor discrepancies of speech, it would be wrong to suppose that the langauge of the Klamath Lake Indians, or that of the Modoc Indians is entirely homogenous within itself. Every class or cluster, band or setlement of Indians has a few terms peculiar to itself, or some words used in other accceptations than observed among its neighbors (re-edition; originally published 1890, Washington, written in English).

Sarsi Texts

The Sarsi are an Athapascan-speaking group of Indians who have been closely associated with the Northern Blackfoot of Alberta since the earliest historical referenceto either tribe in 1754. There are no traditions of a trustworthy nature which connect the Sarsi definitely with any other Athapascan tribe. Linguistically all the northern Athapascan east of the Rocky Mountains except the Sarsi and the Beaver on Peace River have certain sound shifts not shared with the latter two languages. The Sarsi and Beaver, however, are hardly mutually intelligible, although both show relationsships with other languages of British Columbia. The texts presented here were collected during the summer of 1905.

The larger number of these texts were revised 1911 with the aid of Charlie Crowchief, who was the interpreter used in obtaining them originally. Many of the texts were also traced with the Rousselot apparatus from his dictation. The publication of the texts is for the purpose of furnishing material for phonetic and grammatical study .

Bien que, par suite du manque d’écriture chez tous ces peuples, je n’ai pas eu précieuses donnée que peuvent fournir l’histoire et la vie des langues, je crois cependant être arrivé par le rapprochement at la filiation de leur mécanisme grammatical et leurs mots, à obtenir des résultats nouveaux et utiles pour la linguistique américaine (de la préface).

NOTE: The author proposes an alternative origin for Kechua and Aimará, namely from the Sumero-Assyrian family of languages. With this thesis being long refuted, especially volume II and III lose much of their academical value for contemporary linguists.

However, the present volume (I) has its uses. It still offers a comprehensive ground for ethymological comparisons between several American Indian languages, for example Kechua, Aimará, Innok, Aleutian, Unalashka, Shayenne, Miami, Mohikan, Ottawa, Skoffi, Mikmak, Algonquin, Shawni or Surikoa.

Études Linguistiques Caraïbes

Pour ceux qui veulent s’initier aux langues caraïbes, le travail de M. Lucien Adam, « Matériaux pour servir à l’établissement d’une grammaire comparée des dialectes de la famille caribe » (aussi disponible sur www.lincom-shop.eu) est certainement une œuvre indispensable. Pourtant ce livre montre à présent bien des lacunes, et nous sommes demandés s’il ne vaudrait pas la peine de le remanier.

Dans le premier chapitre sont réunis quelques règles communes à plusieurs dialectes caraïbes, qui n’ont pas été notées par Lucien Adam, et un vocabulaire comparé supplémentaire. Il faut se méfier ds comparaisons lexicologiques faites par des personnes ne connaissant pas à fond les grammaires des langues dont il s’agit. C´est pourquoi nous avons retreint la comparaison lexicologique aux dialectes de la famille caraïbe, excepté pour les noms des animaux et des plantes, qui sont le plus souvent exempts de préfixes ou de suffixes personenels (de la préface).
