La efectividad de un modelo metodológico mixto para la enseñanza-aprendizaje de español como LE

Kerwin A. Livingstone
University of Guyana

Curriculum Review: Analysis of a Spanish Translation Course Curriculum from the University of Guyana

Kerwin A. Livingstone
University of Guyana

This curriculum review report centres its attention on the analysis of a Spanish course curriculum document from the University of Guyana. The aim of this report is to highlight those areas that are deficient in the current course curriculum, analyse and revise them, and make recommendations for improvements. Information about the University of Guyana, along with its vision, mission and value statements are presented. Then, a discussion ensues on curriculum planning, designing and development, paying specific attention to what curriculum entails. An analysis is conducted of the course curriculum, highlighting both the positives and the negatives. Subsequently, recommendations are made for changes to the course curriculum and conclusions are drawn from the report. Further, the old and new course curriculums are presented as an appendix, along with rubrics for all the assessment tasks, and a constructively-aligned lesson. The intention is that this new curriculum be used to revolutionise learning and teaching at the University of Guyana, and in all those Universities where learning and teaching is deficient.

Poems and Short Stories: Authentic Resources for English Language Learning

Alan Maley, Jayakaran Mukundan & Handoyo Puji Widodo (eds.)

Poems and Short Stories: Authentic Resources for English Language Learning, a collection of poems and stories written by Asian teachers, continues the work of the Asian English Language Teachers’ Creative Writing Group in existence since 2003. The current text accentuates the creation of poems and stories based on lived experience. In other words, both are means of expressing and negotiating our own life narratives or stories. Through poems and stories, students can voice their own life narratives in a relaxed way in which cognition, imagination, dialog, and experience interweave each other. To this end, the current volume attempts to demonstrate practical ways to create poems and short stories based on day-to-day encounters. We argue that both poems and short stories recognize the subjective experience of the individual; therefore, they are authentic or real-life resources for learning another language, such as English.

Unpacking the Core Teaching and Learning Practices of Arabic at a Major U.S. University: Critical Assessment, Innovation, and Collaboration

Abderrahman Zouhir
Wayne State University

There is no doubt that Arabic is gaining ground in U.S. universities. However, U.S. students face major difficulties in learning Arabic as a foreign language. They are surprised to find a challenging curriculum that does not meet their needs and expectations. Many students are losing their enthusiasm for Arabic quickly and few of them are continuing their studies beyond the intermediate level. As such, the focus of any study should now shift to the retention and advancement of students learning Arabic. To this end, this study attempts to place Arabic within the fold of other foreign languages as they are taught in the Western world. This study will be useful not only to students but to teachers and program coordinators as well.

The data of this study was collected at a major U.S. university. A teacher and six students learning Arabic participated in this study. Questionnaires, interviews, observation, and think-aloud protocols were used as data collection methods. The study critically assesses the teaching and learning of Arabic, and provides some recommendations that are peculiar to the study setting as well as to the general field of teaching Arabic as a foreign language in the United States. Findings suggest that extra-curricular activities should be promoted in teaching and learning Arabic.

The rating of class essays written by students of English as a second language: A qualitative study of criteria and process

Manal Saleh Alghannam
Qassim University

This study concerns a neglected aspect of L2 English writing research: teachers' processes when rating essays written by their own students for class practice, not exams, with no imposed rating/assessment scheme/rubric. It draws on writing assessment process research literature, although most work has been done on scoring exam writing, using a set scoring rubric, where all raters rate the same essays.

Eight research questions were answered from data gathered from six teachers, with a wide range of relevant training, but all teaching UK university pre-sessional or equivalent classes. Instruments used were general interviews, think aloud reports while rating their own students' essays, and follow up immediate retrospective interviews. Qualitative coding was undertaken using NVivo.

Teachers reported similar perceptions of ‘good writing’, and all used a form of analytic rating, achieved in three broad stages, drawing in part on information beyond that just in the essay text.  However, they varied in what criteria they prioritized when actually rating essays, and in the scales, they used to summarize evaluations, ranging from IELTS scores to evaluative adjectives. Most claimed to use personal criteria, and showed concern for the consequential pedagogical value of their rating more than achieving a test-like reliable score.

Differently Literate: Vernacular Medium Learners and the Teaching of English in Telangana

Nittala Noel Anurag Prashanth
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing, Kurnool

This book makes a case for “differently literate” vernacular medium (VM) learners in the context of Telangana State (TS), India. It argues that learners are differently literate and bring different skill sets into a classroom. This, the book contends, may be considered as an advantage rather than a hindrance in the teaching-learning environment. Using the context of VM learners in select schools of TS, it claims that the concept of “differently literate” allows the teaching-learning of English to begin from a more constructive starting point, rather than viewing them as weak or poor in English proficiency. Such a perspective, the book suggests, may help teachers and policymakers to improve the teaching methodology of English. The book accomplishes this through an exploratory study of English language learners from English medium (EM) and VM high schools in TS. All these factors—influences, attitudes, aspirations, motivation levels—that impact the skill levels, learning strategies, etc. that learners bring to the classroom make them, it is argued, “differently literate”.

The book is divided into 5 chapters, Chapter one presents the introduction locates the context of the research in terms of a brief history of language education in the state of TS, particularly English. Chapter Two establishes the theoretical framework for the study. Chapter Three puts forward the rationale of the study, its nature and design. Chapter Four describes the methods of data analysis and interpretation. Chapter Five presents a summary of the findings.

Reflective Practice: A Professional Learning of English Teachers

Somy Paudyal
Tribhuvan University

Research on reflective practice is prevalent in school level and not so much in university level. Therefore, this research entitled Reflective Practice: A Professional Learning of English Teachers is an attempt to find out if university teachers specifically of Tribhuvan University practice reflective practice in their classrooms and to unwrap university teachers' experience on reflective practice with the help of stories. Two university teachers from Tribhuvan University, Central Department of English Education, Kirtipur, were purposefully selected. Non-random purposive sampling procedure was used to select the university and the teachers. Interview guidelines were used to collect the data and stories of the university teachers were recorded. The findings of the study showed that teachers of Tribhuvan University practice reflective practice on their own efforts which has helped them in their professional learning. They shared their reflective experiences to students or expressed through journal publication. Although the university was not found to have any programs for the teachers to practice reflective practice, these intrinsically motivated teachers have practiced it in their own ways.
