An Introduction to Japanese Phraseology

This book explains the main linguistic features of Japanese phraseological expressions, i.e. phraseologisms (PHOs), and is written for students of Japanese and Japanese linguistics.
 
The monograph consists of five chapters: Introduction (Ch. 1), Lexicology and Lexicosemantics (Ch. 2), Morphosyntax (Ch. 3), Semantics (Ch. 4), and Summary and Conclusions (Ch. 5). The book categorises Japanese PHOs into seven types: idioms, similes, aphorisms and quotations, proverbs, koji-seigo (ancient Chinese proverbs and sayings), kanji compounds (kanji-jukugo), and empty phrases. Approximately 400 PHOs are used to depict the main linguistic properties of Japanese PHOs: polylexicality, lexicality and reproduction, rigidity (stability), delexicalization, idiomaticity, and finally short expressions. Some PHOs are explained etymologically to draw the attention of the reader to classical Chinese literary works and the Japanese cultural background. In order to illustrate how Japanese PHOs are used concretely in the media today, c. 70 PHOs in Japanese national newspapers were selected and analysed. Thus, the book elucidates not only linguistic characteristics of Japanese PHOs, but also their practical use. The majority of PHOs explained in the book are analysed morphosyntactically so that the student can also see the agglutination of lexical items and thus learn Japanese grammatical structures.

This book offers a description of the development of multi-word verbs over the years 1750-1850; and specifically, it focuses on phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs and phrasal-prepositional verbs in Late Modern English (LModE).
 
The topics included in the book respond to the growing interest in research on the LModE period, which until recently had received only limited attention. Descriptive analyses of frequency and the use of multi-word verbs are complemented with a discussion of the factors and mechanisms driving language change, such as grammaticalization, lexicalization, idiomatization, direct formation, reanalysis and analogy. Adopting a corpus-based method, the book describes the transformation of multi-word verbs, the way stability intertwines with change, further corroborating the status of the LMod period as a time featuring both innovation and stable features.
 
The interplay of internal mechanisms of change favoured the loss of instances and the coinage of new members of the class of multi-word verbs, and often stimulated phenomena of interference between all multi-word verbs and cases of membership shift between classes.

This book makes a case for “differently literate” vernacular medium (VM) learners in the context of Telangana State (TS), India. It argues that learners are differently literate and bring different skill sets into a classroom. This, the book contends, may be considered as an advantage rather than a hindrance in the teaching-learning environment. Using the context of VM learners in select schools of TS, it claims that the concept of “differently literate” allows the teaching-learning of English to begin from a more constructive starting point, rather than viewing them as weak or poor in English proficiency. Such a perspective, the book suggests, may help teachers and policymakers to improve the teaching methodology of English. The book accomplishes this through an exploratory study of English language learners from English medium (EM) and VM high schools in TS. All these factors—influences, attitudes, aspirations, motivation levels—that impact the skill levels, learning strategies, etc. that learners bring to the classroom make them, it is argued, “differently literate”.
 
The book is divided into 5 chapters, Chapter one presents the introduction locates the context of the research in terms of a brief history of language education in the state of TS, particularly English. Chapter Two establishes the theoretical framework for the study. Chapter Three puts forward the rationale of the study, its nature and design. Chapter Four describes the methods of data analysis and interpretation. Chapter Five presents a summary of the findings.

Qur'anic semantics is concerned with: (i) lexical occurrence, (ii) lexical behavior, (iii) word order, (iv) discourse semantics where the purposeful selection of a specific word is interrelated to discourse discursive semantics, (v) lexis meaning which is motivated by discourse ideology, Ideological connotative meanings, and (vi) the semantic analysis of the text mood and diction.  Qur’anic semantics shows the reader: (i) the number of times a word occurs in the whole text, (ii) how the meaning of the word changes according to the context in which it occurs, and (iii) why a given grammatical structure occurs rather than a different one.
 
Qur’anic semantics examines the semantic aspects which have impact on meaning on the word and sentence levels. These aspects are: (i) content words (verbs, nouns, nominalized nouns, active/passive participle nouns, adjectives), (ii) function words such as the additive conjunctions such as (thumma – and) and (wa – and), (iii) tense (present, past, future), (iv) marked (unusual) / unmarked (usual) word order, and (v) no-main-verb nominal or main-verb sentences.

Nubri is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the high mountainous areas in Gorkha district of western Nepal. The Government of Nepal enumerates the Nubri community as ‘Larke’. It is tonal, and bears a number of features of Sinospheric languages. Nubri has distinct sets of plain and honorific vocabularies of nouns and verbs.

      The nouns inflect for classifier, emphasis, number and case. The definiteness and indefiniteness in Nubri is expressed by using the clitics. It seems that Nubri is an ergative-absolutive language, but the ergativtity is optional. Most of the pronouns in Nubri resemble to that in Tibetan varieties. Although there are a very few monosyllabic adjectives, most adjectives are polysyllabic. The comparative and superlative forms are morphologically derived.

      The past conjunct suffix is -hin and the past disjunct suffix is -soŋ. Nubri has the finite forms of verbs particularly in the past tense, which was traditionally described as ‘conjunct/disjunct’ in some other languages. Some aspects are generally expressed by serial verb constructions.

      Nubri shares a number of features of SOV languages in its word-order correlations. Some modifiers precede the head noun in the noun phrases whereas others follow it. The negative suffix is -m. The complement clauses are marked by the suffix -ken, and -tsi in Nubri along with the grammaticalized form of the verb lap 'say'. Nubri permits different kinds of suffixes in relative clauses decided by the semantic role of the noun which is modified. The adverbial clauses in Nubri typically precede the main clauses. There are three non-finite forms of verbs used in the converbal constructions in Nubri. Nubri shares a number of morphological features with Kyirong Tibetan.

Bashō’s last masterpiece of ‘Narrow Road to the Deep North’ is written as the outcome of his long journey to the North-East remote areas in the deep northern areas in Japan. Spending six months walking, the purpose of the journey was to find the Way to discover a better scope for the Genroku haiku schools, which were wanting poetic truth, that is, inherent elegance from the ancient waka poetry.
 
Haiku poetry, derived as the shortened form waka, has become too farce-oriented, losing its thematic richness and the aesthetic beauty woven into wake traditions. The time and the place of socio-economic status was changing at the Tokugawa period (1603-1867). The samurai and aristocratic dominant society shifted to the common people, such as rich farmers, industrial factory owners, and businessmen. Naturally, the genre of poetic literature was responding to the socio-economic change of the time. Bashō’s poetic soul yearned for the poetic elegance of beauty seen in classics. The elements of wabi. sabi, and mono no aware were pushed away.
 
Bashō’s journey to the deep north is his Way of looking into and directly investigating what may happen in his own poetic soul; he follows the footsteps of his beloved mentor poets who had lived and died on their journeys. He visited Utamakura, which were places where those great ancient poets walked and composed their poems. This is Bashō’s Ethnographic basis and his Ethnographic scope has three spheres: life with nature, men, and spiritual beings.
 
The other study, ‘Time and Space in Basdō, Buson, and Issa’, discusses their haikus to explain Bashō’s influence on Buson and Issa, who came to create their own styles later in their forties.

Intervention in the translation process is not new and was enacted more excessively in the past than today. Three issues that intervene in the process of translation are namely ideology, culture, and power. The most dangerous interventions are caused by ideology in totalitarian regimes. Ideological orientations interfere with power relations and cultural items as well as literary production and translation. However, ideology is hidden in any language use, its meaning is embedded in any text or discourse, and its manipulative power has been enacted at any level in the process of translation. In the 50s and 60s, translators began to evaluate the techniques to affect the target audience through translation. They began to consider how to ideologically manipulate the texts to achieve this goal. Referring to Lefevere’s (1992) view, by a means of translation it is possible to motivate a nation’s ideological dogmatism or racism, and to engage the world in an ideological battle since as a main policy, ideology exists at any level of translation. The ideological translation can be seen as a threat to the national identity, culture, and power in society. To cope with such a problem in translation, power controls the filtering process by all means. Yet it not only controls the linguistics property of the text but the cultural/ideological aspects of the text and the sociopolitical situation in which the text is produced and comprehended.
