Sanskrit Pronunciation & Accents
Applications of the Natural Phonetics & Tonetics Method
Luciano Canepari
University of Venice
The pronunciation of classical Sanskrit is described according to the principles of Natural Phonotonetics (which is concisely introduced in two chapters), mainly following serious ancient texts and descriptions, mostly due to Panini.
The pronunciation of ‘modern’ Sanskrit is also presented, including 17 accents, typical of the Indian subcontinent, dealing with vowels, consonants, structures, stress, and intonation, for comparisons.
Also some diachronic phonopses and a concise vocabulary are included. The concise phonopses of 26 peculiar languages are presented for useful comparisons, too.
