A Dictionary of Cameroon Pidgin English Usage

Pronunciation, Grammar and Vocabulary

Jean-Paul Kouega

Université de Yaoundé 1

This book describes Cameroon Pidgin English, focusing on its pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.

Pidgin English has been in active use in Cameroon for over 500 years; it started in the Slave Trade years, resisted a German ban during the German annexation period (1884-1914) and survived post-independence neglect. It took flight when it became a makeshift language used in plantations and, today, it has left the plantations for the homes and other domains of public life.

The first attempt to codify this language was made by the Catholic Church, which used it to produce a number of religious materials including the catechism. The second attempt was made by textbook writers for American Peace Corps, who have to learn the language when they arrive Cameroon as they need it to communicate with people in rural areas. The present work sets out to bring together, in a single document, the characteristic features of this language.

The work is divided into two parts. Part One comprises two chapters. The first gives background information on Cameroon, focusing on its geographic and economic situation. Then it examines the evolution of Pidgin, the place of this language in the linguistic landscape of the country, the users of this language, the domains of its use and finally the status and future prospects of this language in Cameroon. The second chapter, which describes the linguistic features of the language, outlines the research design that underlies the subsequent study of the pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary of this language.

Part Two is a dictionary which provides a lexical inventory of common present-day Pidgin English items used by spoken media practitioners to inform and entertain listeners and viewers on a daily basis, by traders in their market stalls, various technicians (mechanics, hairdressers, carpenters, etc.) in their workshops, workers in offices, children on school campuses, and some parents in their homes. In the Appendix section, a few common sayings and proverbs, samples of conversations and of spoken media texts are reproduced.

A Tsum Lexicon

Mark Donohue & Dubi Nanda Dhakal
Australian National University; Tribhuvan University

A Tsum Lexicon is the first publication on the Tsum language. Tsum is the language of the northern valley bearing the same name on the border between Nepal and Tibet. The language is spoken by over 4,000 people and is heavily endangered due to long-standing influence from Tibetan, and the more recent, but potentially even stronger, impact from Nepalese language and culture. This first lexicon contains over 2,400 words searchable via Tsum, English, and semantic fields, and includes a list of basic vocabulary separately.

While there are many aspects of Tsum that are transparently attributable to a close relationship with Tibetan, the question of linguistic affiliation has not been examined in detail, though there are indications that a social relationship with the non-Tibetan linguistic ecology to the south and west has played a strong role in the history of Tsum (Donohue and Dhakal 2015), suggesting an old, and nearly submerged, relationship shared with Kuke (the language of Kutang, to the west of Tsum, past Chamar mountain), and (to a lesser extent) the other languages of the Manaslu area, including Nubri and (northern) Ghale.

Dr. Mark Donohue works at The Australian National University, specialising in the research of languages of Nepal, Bhutan, and Indonesia. He has published on phonology, morphosyntax, and language histories. His work can be found at http://papuan.linguistics.anu.edu.au/Donohue/.

Dr. Dubi Nanda Dhakal works at Tribhuvan University, and has published extensively on both Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman languages of Nepal, as well as work exploring the contact history of these languages. A list of his published work can be found at http://tibetoburman.linguistics.anu.edu.au/Tsum/dnd.php.

Comparative Nivkh Dictionary

Michael Fortescue
University of Copenhagen

This dictionary undertakes to reconstruct the lexis and morphology of the Nivkh proto-language by marshaling and organizing all the data available in published form on the contemporary dialects. It builds upon a considerable body of descriptive and comparative work carried out by scholars who have worked with this typologically unique “Paleosiberian” isolate in the past. Although the time depth between the four “dialects” of Nivkh is relatively shallow, the complex morphophonemics of the language allows for quite deep internal reconstruction. Moreover, the differences between the dialects is considerable. Mutual understanding between speakers of the Amur dialect and the East Sakhalin one is low, and still lower between the Amur and the South Sakhalin dialects, all three of which may in fact be regarded as separate languages. The relationship of Nivkh to anything else either in Asia or the New World is a subject of continuing interest to both linguists and anthropologists. The dictionary does not address this question directly. Reconstructing the proto-language is an essential step, however, to any further comparative work – in particular to sorting out the relationship between Nivkh and the other “Paleosiberian” languages.

Illo-Busa  Dictionary

Ross McCallum Jones

The Illo-Busa dictionary, with English finderlist, was compiled in Nigeria over a seven year period while doing Bible translation. It forms a trilogy together with the simultaneously published Kyanga and Shanga dictionaries. This cluster of languages belongs to the Eastern sub-division of the Mande language family. Dictionaries of the other three languages of this cluster, Boko, Bokobaru and Busa/Bisã, also compiled by the author, were published by Lincom Europa in 2004.

The database is stem based so that any word that begins with a lexeme stem will appear as a sub-entry under that lexeme. The 5000+ head and subwords are written in Illo-Busa orthography, followed by phonetic representations including tones, a part of speech label, and glosses in English.

Borrowed words, etymology, synonyms and variants are given as appropriate, with the borrowings being mainly from Hausa and English. Once a break-away from Busa/Bisã, the Illo-Busa language is now slightly closer to Boko. The 49 page introduction includes an historical survey and a summary of Illo-Busa phonology and grammar. The author’s PhD thesis, the Boko/Busa Language Cluster, was published by Lincom Europa in 1998. It describes the grammar of Boko, Bokobaru and Bisã.

Alto Perené-Español-English
A trilingual illustrated thematic dictionary of Alto Perené (Arawak) of Peru

Elena Mihas
James Cook University

with the assistance of Gregorio Santos Pérez

Alto Perené speakers reside in the foothills of the eastern Andes and the western fringe of the Amazonian jungle of Peru. The highly endangered language is spoken by about three hundred people. There are a few hundred more people with varying degrees of proficiency in the language. This trilingual dictionary is a result of eight years of the author’s fieldwork in the Native community located in Chanchamayo Province of Peru.

The dictionary is produced in close collaboration with fifty native speakers. It collects and preserves the most critical culture-specific information about the community’s traditional ways of living. The introductory prefaces in Spanish and English present a brief linguistic profile of the language. The dictionary provides glossaries in English and Spanish and links to online materials. It contains over 900 entries which are amply illustrated by natural language data from field recordings, and by numerous drawings and photographs. The readership includes Alto Perené learners, bilingual teachers, linguists and anthropologists.
