The Qur'ân: Themes, Incidents and Circumstances of Revelation

Ali Hamzah Abu-Ghararah
Taibah University, Saudi Arabia

In the view of Muslim scholars, the Qur'ân is the divine constitution of the true Muslim. To appreciate its theological message, it should be studied within the different contexts of its revelation. As Arabic is the language of the Qur'ân, the exact meaning of its message and its real spirit can only be fully comprehended by means of either translation into another language or explaining the Qur'ân's themes and circumstances of revelation. Therefore, The Qur'ân: Themes, Incidents and Circumstances of Revelation is a bridge between a reader who is alien to the Arabic language and the message of Qur'ân. It aims to bridge this gap and to bring its readers to the threshold of the Qur'ân in order to be able to appreciate its message accurately.

The Qur'ân: Themes, Incidents and Circumstances of Revelation comprises two parts: Part one serves as an introduction and a summary of each sûrah (chapter). These sûrahs are listed in chronological order. The theme of each sûrah is a discussion of its subject-matter to focus the attention of the reader. It gives the period and place of its revelation as well as the main theme it covers. Part two deals with the incidents and circumstances behind the revelation of certain sûrahs. This book is an invaluable resource, not just for university students majoring in Islamic studies, but also for Western scholars of Islam.
