The second issue of the first volume of the IJRLC is especially dedicated to the educational problems of Roma in Europe and in Russia. Some of the mainstream journals such as Intercultural education and Education in Europe for last decade or so have also published special issues on Roma education. It is extremely important that specialists with different scientific interests do research and publish on this important issue.
The first paper by Nadezhda Demeter, ethnographer and historian with Roma ethnic background, is in Russian and this is the first article published in Russian in the Journal. The paper that N. Demeter presents is about the role of education in the process of integration of Roma in the Russian Federation. It gives a good historical background about the education of Roma and particularly interesting are the appendices which list some historical decrees about the governmental decisions to open schools for Roma children at the beginning of the 20th century.
Another historical overview about Roma education we find in the paper of the ethnologists Elena Marushiakova and Vesselin Popov – the education of Roma University students in Europe and how it developed in the last two decades.
William New is an American psychologist who is doing research with Roma children in Greece and he discusses the issues of ethnic identification from the perspective of Roma children and non-Roma children.
The article of Hristo Kyuchukov presents an evaluation of the educational process of Romani language teaching for the past two decades in Bulgaria. Analyses of the difficulties with implementing Romani language education in Bulgaria are offered.
In the linguistic section an article by Peter Bakker is presented. P. Bakker discovered a new text in the Romani language in an old book from 1622 and linguistic analyses of the texts are performed.
A new section is presented in this issue –“Portraits”. Jaroslav Balvin presents a portrait of Mateo Maximoff – a great Roma writer from France and in the future the journal will publish more portraits of Roma and non-Roma personalities with impact on Romani language, culture and history.
