The present book aims at introducing EFL as well as ESL students to linguistics in a concise but comprehensive way. It attempts to use an easy and readable style to the readership, mainly students interested in exploring this fascinating world of language. The focus of the book is to answer questions such as: what is language? What is linguistics? How does it work? What are its features? What are its main branches?
Accordingly, the book is an endeavor to present the basic features and concepts of language and linguistics, outline the fundamental traditional and modern schools of linguistics, and describe the basic branches of linguistics concisely. The main subfields the booklet deals with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. In other words, it discusses sound production, sound patterns, word structures, sentence structure, and the literal meaning of sentences and phrases. The book also includes exercises and study questions at the end of each chapter to test the readers' understanding of the topics under investigation.
