Nedžad Leko
University of Sarajevo
This book is a summary of representative texts by Noam Chomsky dealing with linguistics, politics and media. It is prepared primarily for the students who take the elective course for undergraduates “Chomsky for beginners” at the University of Sarajevo. Since it may be used as a textbook in one semester course, it has 15 chapters (one chapter for each teaching week in a semester). Each chapter is devoted to one book by Noam Chomsky. In the field of linguistics: Syntactic structures, Aspects of the theory of syntax, Language and mind, Reflections on language, Knowledge of language, The minimalist program, On nature and language, New horizons in the study of language and mind; in the field of politics: American power and the new mandarins, Fateful triangle, Hegemony or survival, Hopes and prospects; and in the field of media: Manufacturing consent, Necessary illusions, Media control. This is followed by six appendices: three appendices contain lists of Chomsky’s books in the field of linguistics, then in the field of politics and media, and a list of books about Chomsky. This part of the book also includes three annotated bibliographies of Chomsky’s linguistic works, then his works dealing with politics and media, and finally the works of others about Chomsky.
