A Dictionary of Dumi
(Dumi-Nepali-English Dictionary)

Netra Mani Rai
Tribhuvan University

This trilingual dictionary is based primarily on the author’s years of fieldwork together with numerous discussions and the writer's intuition. It consists of more than five thousand native Dumi words collected from native speakers of the Makpa area. Dumi [dus] is an endangered Kirati language of the Rai group spoken in northern Khotang district in eastern Nepal. It belongs to the east Himalayish sub-branch of the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The population of ethnic Dumi in Nepal according to the 2011 Census is 7,638. Linguistically, Dumi is closely related to other two Kirati languages: Koyee [kkt] and Khaling [klr].

The information which we have chosen to include in the dictionary and its organization are as a result of the experience in writing a grammar of Dumi (Rai, 2017). The user of this dictionary is referred to that work (A Grammar of Dumi: A functional-Typological approach), which should be used in conjunction with the present dictionary in order to gain the best understanding of Dumi. Since grammar and dictionary provide the entire view of the language, this dictionary attempts to provide a brief description of the Dumi language and its native speakers.

This is the first glossary of Nubri, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the bordering villages between Nepal and Tibet. The inhabitants of these places are  known as Nubripas in local language. The Government of Nepal, however, has enumerated them as Larke as one the indigenous nationalities. In the local language the term nubri is composed of two words, nup 'west', ri 'hill', and literally the term refers to the language spoken in the western hills. This lexicon contains 2100 words organized according to Nubri, English and semantic fields.

Dubi Nanda Dhakal works at Central Department of Linguistics, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. He has researched and published extensively in both Tibeto-Burman and Indo-Aryan languages of Nepal.

A Raji-English Lexicon

Dubi Nanda Dhakal
Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal

Raji is an endangered Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Nepal, and also in Uttarakhand in India. This is the first glossary of Purbia Raji spoken in the Bardiya district of western Nepal. Although some materials are available related to Raji spoken in India, there is a dearth of such  materials in Nepal. This glossary contains 1730 words from Purbia Raji spoken in Bardiya, Nepal. This glossary contains basic lexical items the Raji speakers use in their daily lives. Raji borrows nearly half of its lexical items from Indo-Aryan languages spoken in the same geographical areas when the lexical items included in this glossary are analyzed. The percentage of  borrowing is lower when we take a shorter and basic word list.

The glossary is organized into three main sections. The first part provides the Raji lexical items arranged alphabetically with parts of speech, and their English equivalents. The lexical items are presented according to different semantic categories in the second part. The users can sort out the Raji words through English glosses in the third part. An appendix with Swadesh 100 words is given at the end of this glossary.

Dr. Dubi Nanda Dhakal is Associate professor at Central Department of Linguistics, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. His research interests include language documentation, description of lesser-analyzed languages, language contact, and areal typology.

Salinan and English Lexicon

David Shaul
University of Arizona

Salinan and English Lexicon. This companion volume to Salinan Language Studies contains the lexical artifacts upon which the description in the companion volume is based. Based on the descriptive data on Salinan after 1900, it also includes the bountiful data of the vocabulary compiled in the late 1700s by the Franciscans Buenaventura Sitjar and Miguel Pieras. Of the two dialects (Antoniano, Migueleño), Antoniano is the main data source (because of readily available data). However, Migueleño lexical artifacts are given where they are noted in the modern, non-audio recordings of the language. Main entry in the lexicon is by morpheme, and there are just over 2,100 main entries. The English-Salinan index refers the user to compounds and derivations listed under their root morphemes in the lexicon.

A Vocabulary of the Older Teguima (Ópata) Language

David Shaul
University of Arizona

A Vocabulary of the Older Teguima (Ópata) Language. The Teguima (Ópata) language (Opatan subfamily, Uto-Aztecan) is a little known Uto-Aztecan language of northern Mexico (straddling in historic times the boundary between Sonora and Chihuahua). This work gives the data from the copious vocabulary the Jesuit Natal Lombardo, representing Teguima around 1620. Lombardo's recordings detail a complex prosodic system of the language, which completely disappears in copious recordings of the language circa 1800. Because of the drastically different sound patterns, the later data is in the companion volume A Vocabulary of the Younger Teguima (Ópata) Language. Main entry is by morpheme, with compounds and derivations listed as subentries. There are over 2,300 main entries. The English-Older Teguima index lists over 6,500 lexical artifacts listed as subentries.

A Vocabulary of the Younger Teguima (Ópata) Language

David Shaul
University of Arizona

A Vocabulary of the Younger Teguima (Ópata) Language. This work summarizes that copious data recorded in the late 1800s of the Teguima (Ópata) language of northern Mexico. Teguima is a member of the Opata subfamily of Uto-Aztecan, and this family is critical to the evaluation that Opatan, Yomemian (Yaqui, Mayo), and Tarahumaran (Raramuri/Tarahumara, Guarijío) constitute a larger genetic group (Taracahitic) within Uto-Aztecan. The sound pattern of Younger Teguima differs significantly from that of Older Teguima, which is described in the companion volume, A Vocabulary of the Older Teguima (Ópata) Language. An introduction summarizes the sound pattern and morphosyntax of the younger language.  Slightly over 1,000 main entries are by morpheme. An English-Younger Teguima index lists compounds and derivatives found as subentries in the main section.

Dictionnaire finnois-lingala-français

Kadima Batumona Mbatwamba
