Reflective Practice: A Professional Learning of English Teachers

Somy Paudyal
Tribhuvan University

Research on reflective practice is prevalent in school level and not so much in university level. Therefore, this research entitled Reflective Practice: A Professional Learning of English Teachers is an attempt to find out if university teachers specifically of Tribhuvan University practice reflective practice in their classrooms and to unwrap university teachers' experience on reflective practice with the help of stories. Two university teachers from Tribhuvan University, Central Department of English Education, Kirtipur, were purposefully selected. Non-random purposive sampling procedure was used to select the university and the teachers. Interview guidelines were used to collect the data and stories of the university teachers were recorded. The findings of the study showed that teachers of Tribhuvan University practice reflective practice on their own efforts which has helped them in their professional learning. They shared their reflective experiences to students or expressed through journal publication. Although the university was not found to have any programs for the teachers to practice reflective practice, these intrinsically motivated teachers have practiced it in their own ways.

An English-Arabic Glossary of Ecocritical Terminology

Mohamed Kamel Abdel-Daem
Revised by Sanad Motlaq Al-Sobaie

Ecocriticism is the scrutiny of literary output and ecology on a cultural level of interdisciplinarity hence the various scientific fields harmoniously integrate to study ecology and suggest potential views in order to combat the current ecological challenge.

This work purports to provide the Arabic-speaking reader with an English-Arabic glossary of the main terminology of ecocriticism as well as a big number of terms that belong to a variety of fields of cognition: science, sociology, psychology, ecology, politics, philosophy, etc. Giving these numerous scientific terms along with the ecocritical ones emphasizes and illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of ecocriticism: one day the ecocritic might work collaboratively with the politician, the scientist, the philosopher, the linguist, etc. Finally, the terms ‘environment’ and ‘ecology’, their inflections, and their Arabic equivalents, are often used synonymously in this English-Arabic dictionary.

English Phonetics and Phonology
A Course for Arab Students

Nadhim Aldubai
Sana'a University and Taibah University

This book is an outcome of teaching phonetics and phonology to graduate and postgraduate students in different universities in the Middle East for more than twenty years. During this time, the students and the author have felt the need for a coursebook in phonetics and phonology with an eye of comparison between the two languages, Arabic and English. To deeply understand how English and Arabic work in segmental and suprasegmental levels, different topics in phonetics and phonology syllabus are discussed in this book. In order to separate segmental  and suprasegmental levels, the book is divided into two sections: Phonetics & Phonology. In the phonetics section, the book discusses the definition of phonetics, vocal organs, and detailed description of English consonants and vowels with a comparison between Arabic and English consonants and vowels.

In the phonology level, the book defines phonology and draws clear distinction between phonetics and phonology. It also discusses phonemes and allophones with examples from Arabic and English. Extensive exercises on broad and narrow transcription are provided. The prosody of English and Arabic has been discussed in terms of syllable structure, phonological processes, stress and intonation. The theory of Distinctive Features are presented with extensive tasks and exercises. Each chapter is followed by extensive T/F, MCQs and direct questions exercises. Phonetic symbols used in this book are based on the International Phonetic Alphabet Chart (IPA).

Literary Research: The Arts in Language, Communication, Culture and Society

Jidda Hassan Juma’a (ed.)
University of Maiduguri

This book is a research contribution from scholars in the area of Arts and Humanities. It contains articles on languages, linguistics, communication, culture and society. On languages and linguistics aspects the book looks at the fate of languages susceptible to endangerment due to major languages encroachment on their vocabulary and the attitudes of the speakers of the endangered languages.

The interaction between local Nigerian languages with modern European languages such as English and French occupy considerable space. In the area of communication researchers looked at the relevance of artistic designs, theatre and theories, in conveying messages that are educative and in the end transforming society’s mindset. On the cultural aspects scholars have extensively discussed the traditional barriers often created by shortsighted vision to religion, intellectualism and society that resulted into indecent interaction between the subjects.

On the research study in society the scholars have in more details discussed the dual function of society, where the same can be used in the process of destruction and reconstruction. Thus, on the use of drama, they were able to address social vices and the gradually returning peace to insurgent zones of Niger-Delta and Boko Haram in Northeast Nigeria.

Portrayal of Dalit Experiences in the Select Dalit Autobiographies: A Study

Bharathiar University

Autobiography, one of the emerging genres of Dalit writings, emphasizes on the authenticity of experiences. In spite of various supporting and opposing theories on the origin and development of the caste system in India, it is true that India’s 3,500-year-old caste system remains a stigma on humanity. Even after seventy years of independence, Dalits continue to suffer by the effects of evil caste system. They are physically, socially, mentally, economically, politically and religiously experience humiliating conditions in India. Literature, as a mirror to the society, inalienably reflects its happenings through various genres and still stands as a truth across the centuries.

Dalit autobiographies record these experiences as sufferings and agony of the vulnerable people with plea to look in to the truth and come with a compassionate solution to the problem. The present research titled Portrayal of Dalit Experience in the Select Dalit Autobiographies: A Studyisaimed to study five well-known autobiographies written by various authors namely Bama's Karukku (1992), Om Prakash Valmiki’s Joothan (1997), Aravind Malagatti’s Government Brahmana (2003), Y.B. Satyanarayana’sMy Father Balaih(2017), andNarendra Jadhav’s Outcaste: A Memoir(2003).

Manual of Hebrew Syntax

J. D. Wijnkoop
Translated by C. van  den  Biesen

In the treatment of certain chapters I have thought it necessary to work independently for reasons which on comparison would be obvious. This applies  in  the  first  place  to  my  treatment  of the infinitive  and  participle  of  the  verb.  As  I  could not  accept  the  existing  opinions  concerning  them, I have preferred to adopt a  simpler  theory  arising  from their  unique twofold  character of verbum and nomen. Further, in the manner  of  dealing  with  the status constructus, e.g., certain alterations seemed to me desirable.

The terminology, moreover, for naming the cases, such as we find in the classic and modern languages, has in so far it was possible been intentionally avoided. This plan I adopted, because in Hebrew scarcely any trace can be found of the so called flexion of the nomina, by which the various cases are expressed. The status constructus which most of all would remind us of them , on the one hand differs from them because of the alte ration of vowels , and the abbreviation instead of pro longation of words, and on the other hand it is capable of expressing so many cases, that it cannot well be identified  with one or more of them.

Finally, it should  be  observed  that  I have ventured to divide this Manual in a manner different to that usually adopted , by first considering the different parts of the sentence, and  then  its construction (from the author's preface).

Contents: Part I: Nomen (the noun, determination  of the noun, pronouns). Part II: Verbum (the verbal forms, the nominal forms). Part III: The particles (adverbs and adverbial  expressions, interrogative  particles, the remaining  particles). Part IV:  Construction of the sentence (nominal sentences, verbal  sentences, the  influence  of  the  subject upon the  predicate  as  regards  gender  and  number, sequence  of  the different  parts  of the   sentence).

Womanhood & Cooking in the Inner Chamber
Reading the Recipes of Yi Bingheogak’s Gyuhab Chongseo

Jieun Kiaer & Niamh Calway
University of Oxford

Born in 1759 to a prestigious literary family, Yi Bingheogak was a female Korean writer. Yi’s life was fully encompassed by the mid-late Joseon dynasty, a period gripped by a fervour for tightening Neo-Confucian ideology and in which women were scarcely permitted an education stretching to literacy, let alone the opportunity to become published writers. Yi’s master work, Gyuhab Chongseo (A Women’s Encyclopaedia of the Inner Chamber), written in 1809, is a compendium of instructions and advice for women. The work is divided into five sections which focus on food and alcohol preparation, making and mending clothes and dishware, gardening and tending to livestock, childrearing and medicine, and the folkloric methods of maintaining spiritual equilibrium within one’s household. Yi is one of only a small handful of women to have been published in Joseon dynasty Korea, and as such, this work is widely considered to be a crucial source in reflecting the daily duties of yangban women as well as the state of women’s educational literature at the time.

In this book, it has been chosen to isolate and delve into the first volume of Gyuhab Chongseo which centres on food and drink, presenting a translation of some selected chapters of the work, alongside a commentary and analysis of its contents and their wider implications concerning the position of women at the time. This book demonstrates how Yi, and several other women like her, heralded a new era for women’s literary production and consumption, carving out a world of domestic literature through which women could share not just their expertise, but also their own conceptualisation of what being a Neo-Confucian woman meant to them.

Central Numic (Uto-Aztecan) Comparative Phonology and Vocabulary

John E. McLaughlin
Utah State University

The Central Numic branch of the Numic language family of the Uto-Aztecan stock comprises three closely-related languages—Timbisha, Shoshoni, and Comanche. Timbisha and Comanche are spoken by less than a handful of L1 speakers each in eastern California and southwestern Oklahoma. Shoshoni is spoken by fewer than a dozen L1 speakers scattered across Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. All three languages are still spoken in parts of the regions where they lived at the time of contact. A very rough estimate of the time depth of Proto-Central Numic is about a millennium. Timbisha and Shoshoni have an underlying obstruent system which consists of voiceless stops /p, t, k, kw/, two voiceless fricatives /s, h/, and a voiceless affricate /ts/, but a surface phonetic system that includes voiced and voiceless stops, fricatives, and affricates in all the places of articulation of the underlying stops and affricates. This system of underlying and surface obstruents has been partially restructured in Comanche. John E. McLaughlin, Associate Professor of English at Utah State University, has published on the Central Numic languages since 1980.
