A Vocabulary of the Older Teguima (Ópata) Language

A Vocabulary of the Older Teguima (Ópata) Language. The Teguima (Ópata) language (Opatan subfamily, Uto-Aztecan) is a little known Uto-Aztecan language of northern Mexico (straddling in historic times the boundary between Sonora and Chihuahua). This work gives the data from the copious vocabulary the Jesuit Natal Lombardo, representing Teguima around 1620. Lombardo's recordings detail a complex prosodic system of the language, which completely disappears in copious recordings of the language circa 1800. Because of the drastically different sound patterns, the later data is in the companion volume A Vocabulary of the Younger Teguima (Ópata) Language. Main entry is by morpheme, with compounds and derivations listed as subentries. There are over 2,300 main entries. The English-Older Teguima index lists over 6,500 lexical artifacts listed as subentries.
