How Nepali English Teachers Enhance their English during their Career: a Narrative Inquiry

Rishi Ram Paudyal
Kathmandu University

Learning a foreign or second language is a long process. This vast being the nature of a language, a learner has to continue the learning process even after becoming a teacher.

In this backdrop, the researcher became curious how Nepali English teachers enhance their English during their career as part of their professional development. Every experience is a story and, like other humans, teachers gain many experiences which are their stories. In other words, there are stories within stories. The scholar involved in inquiry wanted teachers to tell their stories of how they enhanced their English with an objective to understand them using narrative inquiry.
Five secondary-level Nepali English teachers, two males and three females, were selected for the research. Although their workplace was within Kathmandu Valley, they were from different parts of the country and they represent other Nepali English teachers.

The study found that Nepali English teachers are doing their best to enhance their English. They buy books, listen to English programs and audio books, read newspapers, speak English with students, friends, and family members to give a few examples. Most importantly, they want to gain fluency in speaking. Writing is their second priority.

Jacques Fame Ndongo, le sémioticien africain

Marcelline Nnomo Zanga & Pierre-Suzanne Eyenga Onana (eds.)
Université de Yaoundé I

Romani Lexicography in the Nineteenth Century

Volume 1: Vasile Pogor. Lexicon Româno–Ţigănesc/ Romanian–Gypsy Dictionary

Julieta Rotaru, Aurore Tirard & Viktor Shapoval
INALCO, INALCO, Moscow City University

This is the first volume of monographs about the beginning of the Romani lexicography in Romania. It consists of the critical edition of the Romanian-Romani curiosity driven dictionary written in the 1870s by Vasile Pogor (1833-1906), a descendent of an old aristocratic family from Moldavia. The volume includes a valuable grammatical description of the linguistic material, biographical sketches of the author and an extensive bibliography of his works. All entries of the Romanian-Romani dictionary have been translated into English. Two reverse dictionaries were added as dictionaries of the critically examined and accepted entries from the Romanian-Romani-English edition, but in other two directions: Romani-English and English-Romani. The authors of the volume have chosen to reject many of the conspicuous entries copied by the Moldavian author from other sources, and to maintain some doubtful entries, indicating them with a question mark. In the reverse dictionaries the phonetic Romani-Romanian alphabet used by V. Pogor was interpreted and transliterated to a currently accepted Romani alphabet.
